‘I taught Yoruba for 20hrs per day for 4 years, I have been to the lowest’: Masoyinbo host Olalekan Fabilola (Video)

pmnews, December 7, 2025

Yorùbá language etymologist and popular show host Olalekan Fabilola, known for the program Masoyinbo, has shared untold stories about his personal and professional struggles in a recent interview.

Fabilola appeared as a guest on actress Biola Bayo’s YouTube show, Talk to B, where he recounted the journey of his show. He revealed that the concept of Masoyinbo was conceived in 2007/2008 but only gained widespread recognition in 2024.

Speaking candidly about his life as a married man during the early years of his career, Fabilola disclosed that he faced extreme financial hardship. “There was a time I hit rock bottom,” he said, noting that he had no money and was chased out of his house due to debts. The Yoruba scholar explained that his modest earnings from teaching the Yoruba language were not enough to make ends meet.

Fabilola also revealed the grueling effort he put into teaching, stating that he once taught Yoruba for 20 hours a day over four years just to survive. Despite the intense workload, he maintained a rigorous schedule, sleeping only four hours daily.

Interestingly, Fabilola shared a unique insight into his process of studying the language: “While I sleep, I search for the meanings of some words in my dreams. Unconsciously, I say them aloud, and my wife writes them down for me to review when I wake up.”

Speaking about his family and education, Masoyinbo revealed that he inherited around 110 clothes following the passing of his father, who had 20 children in total. He also shared that he studied Computer Science at Covenant University.
