Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has stirred public debate after openly identifying as Biafran and insisting that every Igbo person naturally falls under the Biafran identity.
Speaking in an interview with Yanga 89.9 FM, Lagos, the “Limpopo” crooner clarified that Biafra, in his view, represents a cultural and ethnographical heritage, not a separatist agenda.
Kcee said:
“As far as I am concerned, every Igbo man under the sun today is a Biafran. I am a Biafran. I am an Igbo man, and Biafra is where we are from. It is just like the Arewas and Oduduwas.”
He explained that the historical root of the name dates back to 1967 when Frank Opigo from Bayelsa suggested “Biafra” as a unifying name for the Igbo people. Before that period, Kcee noted, they were simply known as Igbos.
According to him, “Biafra was created in 1967… Being Igbo means you are still a Biafran.”
The singer emphasized that identifying as Igbo automatically places one within the broader Biafran heritage.
Kcee, who was dragged by Igbos after denying the Biafrans during a previous interview with Carter Efe, made a U-turn and admitted he’s Biafran as much as he’s Igbo.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions among different tribes in Nigeria, especially in the South. Many took to the comment section to educate netizens about Biafra.

Bakrash also said, “Igbo is a cultural identity, Biafra is a political expression mainly by igbos but not exclusive to igbos. Biafra is a separatist ideology, which is defined by the creation of an igbo dominated nation state. If an igbo man does not believe in this ideology, he can happily say he isn’t Biafran. Kcee is showing cowardice here! Except he believes in the biafran political ideology.”
