‘My Pastor friend helped me build my mosque, no room for religious war in Yorubaland’: Muslim cleric preaches (Video)

A Muslim cleric in Yorubaland has called for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, sharing a personal story to emphasize harmony between faiths.

Speaking to muslims during a sermon in his mosque, the cleric revealed that he purchased the land on which he built his mosque from a pastor friend. He added that the pastor, whose church is located next door, actively helped him during the construction of the mosque.

“Don’t bring your religious war agenda to Yoruba land. I bought this land from my pastor friend and built a mosque with the help of my pastor friend next door. The house behind me is his church. We have never fought,” the cleric said.

He further shared that the friendship extends beyond professional courtesy, noting that on his child’s wedding day, he and his pastor friend attended the ceremony together, with the pastor carrying his Bible.

He said, “On my child’s wedding day, we went together with him, carrying his Bible.”

His remarks have resonated with many Nigerians, especially the Yorubas, with social media users praising the story as a reminder of how interfaith relationships can thrive through mutual respect and understanding.

An X user, Adegoke wrote, “Yoruba culture and values existed long before any religion, and that is why we don’t fight over faith. In Yorubaland, the first law is Omoluabi ,good character, respect, and peaceful living. Yoruba people understand that God has many names, but we all serve the same Creator. That’s why in Yorubaland: During Sallah, Christians eat ram. During Christmas, Muslims eat rice. During Easter, everyone celebrates together. At Egungun, both Christians and Muslims watch the masquerades. At Ileya, meat enters every compound. At weddings, naming ceremonies, burials, you’ll see all religions under the same canopy, laughing, eating, and praying. We don’t divide families here. A Yoruba home can have a Muslim father, Christian mother, traditionalist grandparents, and everyone still eats from one pot. Don’t bring religious war into Yorubaland.”

Another one Akeem said, “Muslims in the southwest will make Islam interest you. There’s no family that doesn’t have both Muslims and Christians all together. When it’s time for Christmas, we celebrate together and when it’s Sallah we as well celebrate together in love. Why is Northern Nigeria”

Layi said, “That’s the Nigeria we love to seePeace, mutual respect, and unity despite differences. Let more people learn from this example. Those in the North will see he’s not “Muslim enough”

Alexander also said, “At my child’s wedding, he came with me carrying his Bible.” This is the Nigeria we deserve.

The cleric’s message highlights the culture of religious tolerance among the Yoruba people, urging others not to import conflict or rivalry between different faiths, as ethnic and religious wars continue to increase in Nigeria, especially in the North.
