Suspected cultists launch deadly attack, kill policeman, passerby in Ogun

pmnews, December 1, 2025

A suspected cult clash in the Ilese area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has claimed the lives of a police officer and one yet-to-be-identified man.

According to a source who spoke to PUNCH Metro, the incident occurred on Saturday night when suspected cultists stormed the area, shooting sporadically.

The source added that the assailants killed a police officer and another man whose identity had yet to be ascertained. He further revealed that the violence was believed to be a confrontation between members of the Aiye confraternity and the Eiye confraternity.

He said, “Tragedy struck last night around 10 p.m. at Ilese via Ijebu-Ode, as two individuals were killed in a suspected cult clash between Aye and Eiye confraternities. “One of the victims is a police officer serving at Obalende Division, Ijebu-Ode. He is known as Olamilekan, while the second person was unknown. They were shooting sporadically when they stormed the area and left residents in panic.”

When contacted on Sunday, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident but said he had not yet received a full briefing on the circumstances surrounding the attack.

He said, “I can confirm that a police officer was a victim in the incident. I am still waiting for the details of what really happened.” Police officers have been victims of violent attacks in recent weeks.

Cult fighting and killings are common in many communities in Nigeria, even with the Anti-cult unit established by the police to curb the menace, but not much has been achieved.
