‘They wanted a first class’: Young man who graduated with Second class upper cries out as family refuses to attend convocation (Video)

pmnews, December 10, 2025

A young Nigerian graduate has taken to social media to share a deeply emotional and heartbreaking experience after his family reportedly refused to attend his convocation ceremony.

The graduate disclosed that his family’s absence was tied to his academic performance, as he graduated with a second class upper (2:1) degree instead of the first class honours they had expected. What was supposed to be a joyful and memorable day of celebration for him instead became a moment filled with mixed emotions.

Identified as @nemipromise5 on TikTok, the young man explained that none of his family members showed up to witness him receive his degree. According to him, their decision was influenced solely by disappointment over his final result, as they had hoped he would graduate with the highest academic distinction.

Despite the emotional weight of the situation, the graduate revealed that he made a conscious decision not to let the absence of his loved ones ruin the entire experience. Determined to focus on the positive, he chose to celebrate his personal achievement on his own terms.

In a TikTok video that later went viral, the young man was seen smiling confidently in his graduation gown, striking poses and trying to maintain a positive outlook. His calm demeanor and resilience resonated with many viewers who could sense the pain behind his smile.

Sharing his thoughts in the video, he wrote:
“Keeping myself happy because life didn’t end when my family members decided not to attend my convocation simply because I graduated with a 2:1 instead of a first class honours. We move.”

The video quickly gained traction on TikTok, drawing widespread attention and sparking mixed reactions from users, with many offering words of encouragement and praising his maturity, while others criticized the family’s stance.
