3 family members dead and others injured as multiple vehicles collide on Lagos-Ibadan expressway (Photos)

Three family members have died, and others were injured in a fatal accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident occured inward the Otedola Bridge on Wednesday, December 12, 2025.

Witnesses said the crash involved four vehicles: an Audi, a Toyota Camry, a Toyota Corolla, and a truck. They alleged that the heavily loaded truck was travelling at excessive speed when it rammed into one of the cars from behind.

The impact caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into two others, triggering a fatal chain-reaction collision. The family of three, identified only as a father, mother, and their child, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident, saying preliminary findings showed that the speeding, fully loaded truck caused the crash after its driver lost control.

“The truck driver absconded immediately from the scene with his vehicle, leaving the victims in peril and evading accountability for the fatal incident,” Bakare-Oki said.

He added that LASTMA officials arrived promptly and coordinated with other emergency responders to rescue survivors and recover the deceased.

“Two critically injured victims trapped within the wreckage were carefully extricated and conveyed by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention,” he said.

He added that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), while the injured were taken to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre, Toll Gate.

The incident highlights growing worries about road safety in Nigeria as crashes continue to claim lives. On Monday, LASTMA reported two deaths and two critical injuries in separate accidents, blaming speeding, overloaded trucks, and night-time driving for many of the fatal cases.

One crash happened on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, and the other on the Third Mainland Bridge. In the Otedola Bridge accident, an unregistered car speeding at what officials called a dangerously high level rammed into a moving, heavily loaded trailer.

Both occupants of the car died on the spot, while the trailer driver fled with the vehicle.
