Victor Wanyama has hailed Super Eagles legend Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha as the greatest African footballer of all time, adding to the tributes the Nigerian icon continues to receive long after retirement
In a viral quick-fire interview clip, the ex-Southampton and Tottenham star was asked to pick his favourites across several football categories. After choosing legends like Ronaldo Nazario, Andrés Iniesta, and Sergio Ramos in earlier questions, Wanyama didn’t hesitate when asked to name Africa’s best ever.
His reply was instant and emphatic: “That has to be Jay Jay Okocha”.
It’s yet another testament to the enduring magic of the 1994 AFCON champion, a player whose flair, imagination, and artistry left an imprint not just on Nigerian football, but on the global game. Despite retiring 17 years ago, Okocha’s legacy remains untouchable for many who grew up watching him terrorize defenders from Lagos to Paris to Bolton.
Wanyama, now 34, highlighted a mix of current and past stars in his other picks, Cristiano Ronaldo for ‘most aura’, Cristian Romero as the best player in the Premier League, and Ousmane Dembélé as the top active player, but when it came to African greatness, he made it clear: no one tops Jay Jay.
