Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has announced the cancellation of his much-anticipated annual TOE All-White Christmas Party, scheduled for December 23, 2025, following a tragic fire that claimed several lives.
In a statement released on Monday, Elumelu and his wife, Awele, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, noting that this year’s festive season will be devoted to mourning the victims and supporting their bereaved families.

Your excitement and tradition mean the world to us.
However, due to the recent tragic fire incident that claimed precious lives, Awele and I have made the decision to cancel the party this year.
This season will be dedicated to remembering, honouring, and holding space for those we lost. They remain forever in our hearts.

It was previously reported that on September 16, 2025, Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building located on Broad Street, Lagos Island, was engulfed by fire.
The blaze reportedly originated from the building’s inverter room and quickly spread through the stairwells and air-conditioning ducts. The incident claimed the lives of 10 people, including staff members of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Capital Plc. Most of the victims reportedly died from smoke inhalation, raising serious concerns about safety standards in Nigeria’s high-rise commercial buildings.
Following the tragedy, the Lagos State Government launched an official inquest to probe the cause of the fire, compliance with fire-safety regulations, and the effectiveness of emergency response procedures. Meanwhile, survivors and members of the public have called for stricter enforcement of safety measures, while Afriland Properties Plc has pledged to review its safety protocols and support the families of those affected.
